GERD: Acid Reflux Symptoms, Treatment & Heartburn Relief
How is GERD treated?
I have been dealing with GERD since then. It has been the struggle of my life. I am on medications which vary in results and length of the results.
The doctor runs the endoscope down your child’s esophagus, stomach, and first part of the small intestine. While looking at the pictures from the endoscope, the doctor may also take tissue samples (biopsy). There is a muscle (the lower esophageal sphincter) that acts as a valve between the esophagus and stomach.
Many patients with GERD are awakened from sleep by heartburn. Several different abnormalities of the LES have been found in patients with GERD. Two of them involve the function of the LES. The first is abnormally weak contraction of the LES, which reduces its ability to prevent reflux. The second is abnormal relaxations of the LES, called transient LES relaxations.
or refluxes) into the esophagus. The liquid can inflame and damage the lining (esophagitis) although visible signs of inflammation occur in a minority of patients. The regurgitated liquid usually contains acid and pepsin that are produced by the stomach. (Pepsin is an enzyme that begins the digestion of proteins in the stomach.) The refluxed liquid also may contain bile that has backed-up into the stomach from the duodenum.
Raising the head of your bed with blocks under two legs may also help. In an endoscopy exam, a small tube with a camera inside it is put into your mouth and down into your stomach. Then your doctor can look inside your stomach to try to find a cause for your pain. If you have these signs, or any kind of stomach pain or discomfort, talk to your family doctor. Dyspepsia is a pain or an uncomfortable feeling in the upper middle part of your stomach.
PPIs (except for Zegarid) are best taken an hour before meals. The reason for this timing is that the PPIs work best when the stomach is most actively producing acid, which occurs after meals. If the PPI is taken before the meal, it is at peak levels in the body after the meal when the acid is being made.
I can concentrate on things like diet modification and rest. My heart goes out to those of you caring for young children and managing a GI disorder. I stopped seeing the specialists because they couldn’t find a diagnosis.
Is Acid Reflux Disease Ever Treated With Surgery?
When your child swallows, this muscle relaxes to let food pass from the esophagus to the stomach. This muscle normally stays closed, so the stomach contents don’t flow back into the esophagus. GERD stands for gastroesophageal reflux disease. It is a more serious and long-lasting type of reflux. If your child has reflux more than twice a week for a few weeks, it could be GERD.
Many nerves are in the lower esophagus. Some of these nerves are stimulated by the refluxed acid, and this stimulation results in pain (usually heartburn). Other nerves that are stimulated do not produce pain. Instead, they stimulate yet other nerves that provoke coughing.
Your child’s pH readings are checked. They are compared to your child’s activity for that time period. Appendicitis is caused by inflammation of the appendix, a 3.5 inch tube of tissue that is attached to the large intestine. About one in 15 people get appendicitis, so it is very common, but it can be dangerous. If left untreated, an infected appendix will burst and release infectious materials into the abdomen.
These babies may not be able to eat much before getting sleepy. Other babies can’t keep a normal amount of formula or breastmilk in their stomachs without vomiting. These babies may do better if they eat a small amount of food continuously. Your baby may need reflux medicine. These medicines can decrease the amount of acid the stomach makes.
I went to see an ENT and was treated for acid reflux, but that brought back the memory of my GERD diagnosis some 15 years prior. I went to a gastroenterologist, had an endoscopy done and was once again diagnosed with GERD.
