Supported by Jacobs Foundation, Jacobs University and DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) the Yachay Initiative not only aims to support fifth graders from Vegesack, but also school children all around the world. Through project-based learning, the undergraduates teach youngsters to develop their leadership skills and to initiate positive change within their community. From March a group of Jacobs students works closely with children from Oberschule an der Lerchenstraße, a secondary school in Bremen-Vegesack. Recently our Zimbabwean students introduced friends and fellow students at Jacobs University to their country’s culture, music and traditions at Country Information Day (CID) Zimbabwe.

Around 200 guests are expected to attend the conferencewhich is a cooperation between Harvard University, Rollins College, Georgia Institute of Technology and Jacobs University. The main topics discussed at this international meeting of experts are new research findings and practice-oriented approaches in the areas of politics, business, culture and society with view to China’s globalization plans. The 7th »China Goes Global« Conference is taking place at Jacobs University from September 25 to 27. Funded by the 7th Framework Programme of the European Union with a total of €3.6million, the project saw researchers from six European countries work together across disciplines.

Secure simultaneous access to archives of NASA and the European Space Agency (ESA) has now been made possible based on the rasdaman Big Data engine, developed by Jacobs University researchers under the lead of Peter Baumann, Professor of Computer Science. The newly adapted technology effectively bridges the Atlantic in real time. At its meeting on February 10, Jacobs University’s Board of Governors has unanimously elected Katja Windt as the President of Jacobs University. The students from eight countries received their certificate for successfully completing the new program ‘VIA BREMEN Logistics Ambassadors’, which was jointly launched byVIA BREMEN and the International Logistics department at Jacobs University. new Social Cohesion Radar for Germany published by the Bertelsmann Stiftung in cooperation with Jacobs University – namely Klaus Boehnke, Professor of Social Science Methodology, Jan Delhey, Professor of Sociology, Georgi Dragolov, Ph.D. Jacobs University’s study programs within these subject areas achieve great results in the ranking.

Researchers at Jacobs University have recently made important contributions to the field of two-dimensional materials, a prerequisite for nanoscale and flexible electronics. As part of the study and based on their LED expertise, the Jacobs scientists have been acting as consultants to companies and communities that are planning to make the switch to LED lights. Frank Oliver Glöckner, Professor of Bioinformatics at Jacobs University, has been appointed as member of the German Council for Information Infrastructures (Rat für Informationsinfrastrukturen) which was established by the Joint Science Conference (Gemeinsame Wissenschaftskonferenz – GWK) for a pilot phase of four years. Frank Oliver Glöckner appointed to Council for Information Infrastructures by Joint Science Conference (GWK) The program of the two musical evenings includes different music genres from classic to rock and from choral singing to traditional Turkish music. The scholarships are awarded to students from economic and science majors. The award is given every year to an outstanding journal paper in the field of transportation science and logistics. The Earth System Science Research School (ESSReS) celebrated the final graduation of 22 of its PhD students with a festive ceremony on Friday, 27th November 2014 at the Seefischkochstudio, Bremerhaven.
